That's why it's called a "Winter" League: February 20 MWCL results
Group D's February 20 session of the Midwest Winter Carp League saw just about everything as far as weather and water conditions were concerned. The recent run-off of the melting snow caused our swims to be much colder than usual. Water temperatures were in the low 40s, and that kind of 10 degree drop was a shock to the Milwaukee carp. In addition, the water was filled with bottles, wrappers, branches, and dead shad. Needless to say, the water conditions were not conducive to a haulfest.
In addition, the day's weather ran the gamfrom showers to freezing rain to sleet to ice pellets to heavy snow with thunder. Two to three inches of heavy, wet snow pelted us during the day. Nevertheless, we gave it our best shot.
The 6:20 a. m. peg draw saw Ernest Kolodziejczyk at 1, Henryk Burza on 2, Lukasz Bober with peg 3, and Frank Rink at 4. Once again, it was the battle of the end pegs as Ernest and Frank went back and forth with the lead all day. Both anglers caught two fish that exceeded 20 pounds, but in the end, Frank took 5 points ( 6 fish, 90+ pounds) and Ernest earned a hard fought 4 points (3 fish, 50+ pounds). Water and weather conditions made it especially tough at pegs 2 and 3 for Henry and Luke. The day's big fish was a 25-12 caught by Frank.
Winter over? Think again! Both the weather and the water tested our gear, our tackle, our clothing, our stamina, and our patience. The February 20 session completed two-thirds of the league's sessions. Best of luck to all as we look forward to a little warmer weather.
